SUMMARY:The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard That Saved America
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard that Saved America \nThe Washington County Historical Society will present Dr. Bruce Venter speaking on his award-winning book\, The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard that Saved America at the Sandy Hill Arts Center at 214 Main Street (5th floor) in Hudson Falls\, NY on Tuesday\, July 7\, 2026\, at 6:30 p.m. This program has been added to our original schedule. \nHubbardton\, a British tactical victory fought on July 7\, 1777\, was one of the first engagements in General John Burgoyne’s campaign to capture Albany and split New England from the rest of the rebellious colonies. Despite a successful opening to his campaign\, Burgoyne ultimately was forced to surrender to an American army after being defeated and surrounded at Saratoga. Burgoyne’s surrender is credited with bringing France into the war on America’s side. The war would end successfully for the United States with a Franco-American victory at Yorktown four years later. Hubbardton is the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. The American victory at Bennington in August 1777 was actually fought in New York. \n“It’s time for folks to start boning up on the 1777 campaign\, the turning point of the Revolution\, because the 250th anniversary of these events is just around the corner\,” said Venter. He will use a PowerPoint presentation and leave time for questions and answers at the end of the program. \nVenter’s book was selected by the editors of the Journal of the American Revolution as one of the “100 Best Books on the American Revolution” and was extensively cited by Pulitzer Prize winning author Rick Atkinson in his new book\, The Fate of the Day which in part\, dealt with the Saratoga campaign. \nDr. Venter is president of America’s History LLC\, a history tour and conference company known nationally for its annual “premier” conference on the American Revolution. Bruce is currently vice-president of the Dr. Joseph Warren Foundation and the Marshall House\, Inc. He also serves on the board of trustees of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance where he does weekly podcasts with Alliance president\, Joh DiNuzzo\, the Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park\, and is a Commissioner on the Saratoga County 250th Commission. He is a “Color Bearer” member of the American Battlefield Trust. He recently appeared on C-SPAN where he presented his lecture on Ethan Allen. His history related articles have appeared in American History\, Blue & Gray\, Civil War\, Patriots of the American Revolution\, Washington Times\, Goochland County Historical Society Magazine\, and the Fort George Post. He is a popular speaker at historical conferences. \nHe holds a B.A. in history from Manhattan College\, a master’s in public administration\, and a doctorate in education. His professional career spanned 36 years in public education. He served as assistant superintendent for finance and operations at school districts in three states. \nDr. Venter is a native of Albany Currently\, Bruce and his wife Lynne live in Goochland County\, Virginia with their adorable beagle\, Molly Brant. They spend summers in Lake George. \nCopies of his book will be available for purchase after the lecture. There is no charge for the event. Donations are gladly accepted. All are welcome! \nWe hope you can join us for this interesting and informative program. \n \n

SUMMARY:Songs and Music of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Songs and Music of the Revolution \nThe Washington County Historical Society will present a program of Songs and Music of the Revolution performed by Cambridge musician Tim Kavanaugh. The event will be held Tuesday\, September 29\, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bottskill Baptist Church\, 26 Church Street in Greenwich\, N.Y. \n \nTim Kavanaugh first became interested and involved in music of the Revolutionary War in 1975\, when he was invited by friends and folklorists George and Vaughn Ward to help research and perform music from the period\, and particularly of the Northern Campaign 0f 1777 under the request and sponsorship of Saratoga National Historical Park. \nAfter researching various collections and libraries\, including the New York State Historical Society in Cooperstown\, the New York State Library and Archives in Albany\, the Folklore Archive of the Library of Congress in Washington\, and the park library and archive at Saratoga NHP\, the trio put together a program that they performed at the park\, and surrounding schools and venues in celebration of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution in 1976. \n  \nUtilizing period music is a unique and valuable form of historic interpretation\, as it is usually primary source documents presented in an entertaining format. Everyone from kids to grandparents enjoy music and even those who say they don’t care for history get an enjoyable lesson. The three continued this musical program for another 14 years; and Tim included the use of music in his field interpretation as a USNPS Ranger/Historian at Saratoga\, Fort Stanwix\, and later\, when he served as Chief of Interpretation at Vicksburg NMP. \nSo now\, 50 years later\, he is still singing these songs and ballads from 1777\, and playing period tunes on the same period instruments he used during the Bicentennial. \nTim Kavanaugh is a former Social Studies teacher\, National Park Service Supervisory Park Ranger and Historian\, and history buff. He is a member of the Washington County Historical Society\, Cambridge Historical Society\, and the Washington County 250th Committee. He and his wife\, Sandi\, live in Cambridge. \nPlease join us for a rollicking evening of music on September 29th !! The event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome to come and enjoy the music and learn about the Revolutionary War. Donations are gladly accepted. If you have any questions\, please contact the Washington County Historical Society at 518/747-9108 Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
