SUMMARY:Local History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:July 12\, 2024 Meeting of WCHS Local History Book Club \nWashington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12 PM until 1 PM on Friday\, July 12\, 2024 at Washington Center\, 4573 State Route 40\, Argyle. This is a short-term and long-term care facility\, formerly known as Pleasant Valley Infirmary. Discussion will focus on the history of the Poorhouse in Washington County. Weather permitting\, the poorhouse cemetery will be viewed. Recommended reading is In the Shadow of the Poorhouse by Michael Katz or The Poorhouse\, America’s Forgotten Institution by David Wagner.  Historical society membership is not required to attend the book club. \nThe August book club meeting will be held in Cambridge\, NY  and will discuss seed businesses of Washington County in the 1800s and 1900s. \nThe book club meets on the second Friday of the month at twelve o’clock. Future sessions of the club will include books about the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Upcoming topics include the temperance movement in our area\, Benedict Arnold’s Navy\, and the Revolutionary role of Thaddeus Kosciuszko. SUMMARY:An Exhibition on the Postal Service of Washington County\, NY
DESCRIPTION:The Washington County Historical Society and the Slate Valley Museum invite the public to attend  “An Exhibition on the Postal Service of Washington County” presented by Stephen Matte. This free program will take place at 2PM on July 27th at the Slate Valley Museum\, 17 Water Street in Granville\, NY. \nStephen has been an avid collector of postal memorabilia for over 30 years and his extensive collection contains items from about 66 local post offices (approximately 90% of all post offices that ever existed in Washington County) with many items from offices that no longer exist. \nWith the talk being held in Granville\, Stephen will be bringing 40 extra Granville postal system items and in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America he will also be bringing two items from the 1700s. \nStephen Matte and his wife live in South Glens Falls. They have 3 children and 10 grandchildren.
