SUMMARY:August Local History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:August 12\, 2026 Meeting of WCHS Local History Book Club \nWashington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 on Wednesday\, August 12\, in the barn at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Finkelstein\, 251 Christie Road\, Greenwich. Membership in the county historical society is not required. Each attendee is asked to bring a chair. \nThe topic is Reminiscences of the Revolution\, Le Loup’s Bloody Trail from Salem to Fort Edward\, by Arthur Reid\, published in 1859. It is an account of the massacre of the Allen family of Argyle in 1777. A quiz on the book will begin the session. \nThe book club meeting will be held in a barn that was on the farm of Alexander McNaughton in 1777. This is reportedly the barn in which frightened neighbors gathered after the massacre\, fearful of the small marauding band of Native Americans. Alexander McNaughton was the leader of the Scottish immigrant group that founded Argyle. \n  \nFuture sessions of the club will feature topics related to the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors.  Upcoming discussions include: papermaking in Washington County; Floyd Bennett’s flight over the North Pole; and Harriet Bentley\, cartographer and artist.  Contact Connie Harris Farrington at  conniehfarrington@outlook.com for further information.
