Local History Book Club
Washington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 on Wednesday, October 14 at the Washington County Municipal Center, 383 Broadway, Fort Edward. The meeting is in the records room of the County Clerk’s area of Building A, near the Historian’s office.
Following the discussion, the group will cross the street to view the grave site of Duncan Campbell in Union Cemetery.
Membership in the Washington County Historical Society is encouraged but not required.
The topic is the Ghost and Duncan Campbell. Discussion will include the role of The Black Watch in the French and Indian War, the battle at Ticonderoga in 1759, and the poem by Robert Louis Stevenson titled Ticonderoga: A Legend of the West Highlands. Duncan Campbell was wounded on the battlefield at Ticonderoga and died five days later at the hospital on Rogers Island in Fort Edward. Union Cemetery was his third interment.
Future sessions of the club will feature topics related to the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Upcoming discussions include: Floyd Bennett’s flight over the North Pole (meeting at airport); Harriet Bentley, cartographer and artist; and Seneca Ray Stoddard, photographer of the Adirondacks.
