Portion of 1853 Washington County Map

When researching Washington County there are a variety of resources at the disposal of historians and family researchers.
Below are lists of organizations outside of us that may be able to help you with your questions.

Please be advised that New York did not require registration of births, marriages, and/or deaths until 1880-81 and even then, compliance with the law was haphazard. Due to this, these records can be lacking for many events.
Newspapers, bible records, and cemetery listings are often searched as an alternative.

To see if a vital record exists for your research contact
the town historian and town clerk where the event happened.

Land records are held with the Washington County Clerk’s office.

Online histories, maps, and newspapers are invaluable resources.

Many of Washington County towns have dedicated
historical societies and local libraries that also my be
beneficial to researchers.

Washington County has a long history of changeable boundaries.
Researchers should also be aware of organizations outside of the county.
