June 11, 2025 Meeting of WCHS Local History Book Club
Washington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, June 11, at the William Miller Farm and Chapel, 1614 County Route 11, Hampton. A guided tour of the site will be available after the session. This was the home of Baptist minister William Miller and the birthplace of the Seventh Day Adventist Movement. The tour includes the first Advent chapel in America, built in 1848 by Miller; Ascension Rock where his followers gathered in October 1844 to await the Second Coming; and the home of church founder William Miller. Historical society membership is not required for the book club.
Suggested reading includes William Miller and the Rise of Adventism by George R. Knight (2011), The 7th Day, the Story of Seventh Day Adventism by Booton Herndon (1960), or any other material about the Millerites.
Future sessions of the club will include books about the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Upcoming topics include; the path of Washington County’s 123rd Regiment in the Civil War; the Battle of Bennington (fought in Waloomsac, New York), and potato harvesting in Washington County.
