September Local History Book Club
September 10, 2025 Meeting of WCHS Local History Book Club
Washington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, September 10, at the historical society headquarters, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward. In addition to reading about the history of potatoes and local potatoes, attendees are requested to bring a potato to the session with appropriate identification. Attention will be given to E. L. Coy, Hebron farmer whose Beauty of Hebron potato was advertised by Burpee in 1893. Use of the Champlain Canal for shipping potatoes and Goose Island potatoes grown in Argyle will also be discussed.
Suggested reading includes appropriate sections of Hebron, A Century in Review by the Hebron Preservation Society.
Future sessions of the club will feature books about the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Upcoming topics include; Charles Evans Hughes, NY governor; Phillip Embury’s establishment of the second Methodist Church in America in White Creek; and Margaret Telford, accused witch of Salem, NY.
