Local History Book Club

May 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

May 10, 2024 Meeting of WCHS Local History Book Club

Washington County Historical Society’s Local History Book Club will meet from 12 PM until 1 PM on Friday, May 10, at Fort Miller Reformed Church, 1239 Fort Miller Road, Fort Miller. Historical society membership is not required.
Attendees are asked to read any biography of Henry Knox, focusing on his cavalcade of sleighs and cannons that moved from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston in January 1775. Knox, then a 25 year old bookseller, is said to have stopped at Fort Miller on his way to meet with General Schuyler. Attendees will also hear about the church building, constructed in 1816 as a meetinghouse.
The book club meets regularly on the second Friday of the month at twelve o’clock, usually at the Washington County Historical Society in Fort Edward. On June 14th the group will meet at the society headquarters to discuss the history of the Washington County Fair and the place of agricultural fairs in the 1900’s. Recommended reading is Dave Thornton’s book, The Great Cambridge Fair.
Future sessions of the club will include books about the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Proposed topics include the temperance movement in our area, the seed industry in Washington Co., and the county poorhouse.
